“Your Body,
Your Business: Why Body Shaming Needs to Stop”
Body shaming
involves criticizing or negatively commenting on someone’s physical
appearances, encompassing aspects like weight, height, skin tone and facial
features. It can occur in person, online or through self-criticism. In contemporary society, influenced by media and ever-changing beauty
ideas, body shaming has become a widespread problem. It involves criticizing
someone’s appearance, which can cause significant emotional and psychological
distress. Despite growing awareness, this issue persists across social media
and personal interactions, affecting people of all ages and background.
Body shaming
includes several forms of criticism:
· Weight Shaming-Involves criticizing
someone’s weight, whether they are perceived as too fat or too thin.
· Height Shaming-Is mocking someone for
their height whether they are too short or too tall.
· Skin Color Shaming-Consists of
judging people based on their skin color, including colorism.
· Feature Shaming- Involves mocking specific
physical features like nose shape, hair texture or scars.
· Age-related Shaming- Criticizes natural signs
of aging, such as wrinkles.
Body Shaming
often stems from today’s “selfie” culture, which overemphasizes physical
appearance through the constant exposure to glamorous celebrities in various
media. Social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook and Instagram can fuel envy
and self-consciousness about perceived flaws, leading to negative feelings and
a diminished sense of self-worth. Fixating on appearance can create
unattainable expectations, causing individuals to compare themselves unfavorably
to digitally altered or enhanced images, even when they are aware of the manipulation.
