How food habits affect our mind

In our life, food plays an important role as it affects our brain, emotions and happiness. There is a relation between our diet and our mind, if we eat good then we feel good.

For many people, food may only be the way of survival but for some it is also a way of fulfilling their cravings and uplifting their mood. As it is for nutrition, emotions and comfort, satisfying cravings makes people feel good. Food reminds people good times from the past which make them feel comfort and sharing food with others can make good bonds and make them feel happier.

Eating foods rich in nutrients such as fruits, vegetables and grains helps maintain a stable heart and mind. It also prevents mood fluctuations and tiredness. The taste, smell and texture of food stimulate senses which improve our mood. Some food like dark chocolate, bananas and yogurt stabilize mood and lower stress.

Nutritional intake impacts mood and happiness. Protein consumption slows carbohydrate absorption and boosts dopamine and norepinephrine, directly affecting mood. Carbohydrates increase serotonin, also influencing mood.

The connection between food and one’s mood like depression needs more research. Specifically, if food choices impact depression and dietary changes can improve mental well-being.

According to Patrica Chocano-Bedoya, a visiting scientist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, current research on diet and depression in inconclusive, though there are indications that food may be a factor in depression.

Overall, food impacts our mind and emotions, contributing to feelings of happiness and satisfaction.
